The Garden
Surrounded by the Berkeley’s three buildings, the garden is a peaceful, collectively maintained space that provides a beautiful outdoor environment for residents and their guests.
Members of the Garden Committee care for both collaboratively and individually managed plots. The committee was established when the cooperative began the rejuvenation of the garden, to coordinate the development and to advise the Board. As part of the garden renovation, residents were offered the opportunity to adopt small garden plots.
Gardeners who adopt a plot are responsible for developing and maintaining their gardens at their own expense and time but receive advice and support from the committee. The committee co-chairs maintain a waiting list for the plots, and any resident who desires a plot can ask to be added to the waiting list.
The committee meets monthly from March to November to discuss garden issues and plan for ongoing development, and periodically schedule work days to focus on specific projects. Garden Committee membership is open to all, not only those with plots.
The Berkeley garden has been a stop on the annual Historic Jackson Heights private garden tour every June!
